Wastewater Case Study in Nebraska

The Problem

A wastewater facility in Nebraska was interested in transitioning to a biogas to RNG facility. Typically, Glauber Equipment installs equipment in Class 1, Division 2 hazardous locations, however this facility is classified as a Class 1, Division 1 hazardous location. This distinction, established in the National Electric Code (NEC) put forth by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), means the area has enough flammable gases and vapors in the air to create a continuous risk of explosions or fires.

Because workers have to operate under the assumption that flammable gases and vapors are always present, they require stringent safety procedures and reliable equipment to make the site as safe as possible. This includes the need for explosion-proof equipment that can control the risk of explosions and malfunctions in the event of small electrical explosions.

The Solution

To facilitate the best possible solution for our client’s space, safety, and budget constraints, we worked in close contact with both the client and their equipment vendors. We provided a full-service solution, which included design manufacturing, programming, startup, and maintenance services over a two-year period to ensure the final equipment and placement met or exceeded all requirements. We sourced specialized equipment that meets the Class 1, Division 1 requirements while also optimizing footprints to account for the limited space requirements.
Ultimately, we developed a solution that achieved the following:

All electrical components, such as motors and sensors, were modified and reclassified to ensure compliance with electrical codes.
All non-incendiary or intrinsically safe conduits and components were upgraded or replaced with explosion-proof solutions to comply with more stringent Class 1, Division 1 NEC standards.
Safe distancing was implemented between equipment and control panel locations to facilitate better ventilation and safety compliance.

The Results

As a result of our design planning and sourcing, the facility’s equipment is explosion-proof and built fully to code. The design work ensures that proper placement of the equipment is simple, and the facility meets or exceeds the stringent standards for Class 1, Division 1 hazardous environments.
